The Penny Test – How To Tell When You Need New Tires

Penny Test For Tires - Gladewater, TX

Your tires are a critical component of your car, which is why it is so important to take care of them and replace them when they wear down. One of the simplest ways to tell when you need new tires is by checking the tread depth. The penny test is an easy way to do that.

All you need to do is take a penny and stick into the tread grooves on your tire with President Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is worn to an unsafe level, and you need new tires. If Lincoln’s head is covered, then you have more than 2/32 of an inch of tread remaining, and your tires are probably still safe. Keep in mind, however, that if they are running close to the cut-off, you should consider scheduling a service appointment to avoid an accident.

To help your tires last longer, you need to get regular tire rotations. This should happen every six months or at 6,000 to 8,000-mile intervals. Tire rotations help your tires wear evenly rather than in a lopsided way.

Another important part of preventative maintenance is routine wheel alignments. If one tire is wearing down a lot faster than the others, it could mean that one wheel is out of alignment. You will want to get this taken care of before it completely ruins your tires.
